My Bank Forces Me To Lend THEM Money For Free!
I've been puzzled over the last few days. The amount of money in my bank account, and the amount of the money that the bank would allow me to withdraw differed by £250. Why? The money was there for sure. I was 95% sure that there was no cheque that I'd written that hadn't been cashed, and I hadn't bought anything with my debit card that would account for this discrepancy. This was silly. I wanted to draw out money and couldn't. And I could not understand way. Furthermore, the bank manager was unable to tell me why! Then I remembered. I had hired a car over the weekend and they had held a £250 deposit! The money was never actually withdrawn from my account, but they had it "on hold". Of course, they released it immediately when I returned the car in good order. But the bank... well they are holding on to that money for 3-5 working days. Even though it never actualy left my account. And even though the actual payment to the rental company came out of my account immediately. So - the money that goes OUT via the debit card goes out same day, or next day. But the money that comes back IN via the debit card (even though it never actually went out in the first place!) takes 3-5 days. It's clear the computer systems can make the transfers as fast as the banks want them to - so this is clearly a matter of policy. Which is BAD policy, and BAD customer service. At a time when the banking/financial industry has a reputation about as low as it can get. |
