Three Domains of Leadership
There is a superb model of leadership explained in the book "Action Inquiry" written by Bill Torbert and associates. I am on my third reading of the book: it contains such depth of understanding of the issues of personal development and leadership that it needs several readings for all the insight to get absorbed. Here some of the key ideas, very briefly summarised: True leadership requires a focus on action in three domains: 1. The Self (Subjective) The goals here are Integrity and Effectiveness 2. The Group (Inter-Subjective) The goal here is Mutuality (all different viewpoints are understood, and where possible, common agreement reached) 3. The Organization (Objective) The goal here is Sustainability, meaning the success of the organization along four time horizons - The immediate time - A few weeks or months - Several years - Many years (15-20) In all domains, the leader has to balance activities across four "territories". The territories are: 1st: Outside Events - results - assessments - observed behavioural consequences - environmental effects 2nd : Own Sensed Performance - behaviour -skills - pattern of activity - deeds as sensed in process of enactment 3rd: Action Logics - strategies - schemas - ploys - game plans - typical modes of reflecting on experience 4th: Intentional Attention - presencing awareness - vision - intuition - aims Actually practicing these ideas fully is a hugely difficult task - and one that very few people ever achieve. However, the act of trying is itself a way of help the individual improve and, eventually transform. Torbet uses a 7-stage model of transformation. The stages -called Action Logics are: - Opportunist - Diplomat - Expert - Achiever - Individualist - Strategist - Alchemist
