Why People Don't See Eye To Eye
Why is it so hard for some people to communicate with other people - even when they speak the same language? A whole range of reasons can be proposed, but one that is rarely mentioned is that people have different "world views". Another way of saying this is that they have reached different levels of cognitive development. This is nothing to do with different levels of intelligence, nor of different cultures. This is to do with the fact that, as adults, we continue to evolve. We are all familiar with the idea of children developing through 4-5 levels of cognition. The world-view and sense of identify of a 1 year-old baby if vastly different to the world-view and sense of idenity of a 5 year-old, and the same for an 11 year-old and an 18 year-old. But most people think that development ends there - more or less. But that is not the case. Researchers (such as Clare Graves, Jane Loevinger, and Robert Kegan) have proven that we have the potential to develop through 4 or 5 (or maybe more) additional levels after reaching adulthood. And although the differences do not appear to be so great as with the changes that happen during childhood, they are probably just as profound - only more subtle. Being more aware of this as a fact of what it means to be human would go a long way to improving our understanding of each other, our expectations of each other, and our actions for helping ourselves (and others) to reach higher levels of achievement. The thing is - it's no good just "trying harder" to achieve certain things. Instead, we need to work on "transforming" ourselves to higher levels, and then what we found impossible before, we can easily take in our stride. |
